The initiation exits are presented as a contact with the canoe or the kayak in an efficient and safe way. The Activity is aimed at those people who want to start or have little experience. It takes place in a safe and controlled environment, according to the age and level of the participants.

The crossings are proposed as an exit for those already initiated, in these the most attractive points of the coast are traveled. It usually does not last more than half a day. We can also combine with other activities, or make crossings of several days. The most common combined and multi-day departures are: The return to the Mar Menor, Murcian Coast and the visit of the Cueva del Gigante, Neptuno cave, Cueva del lago arco de cabo Tiñoso, Cueva de las Minas and Cueva del Dragón in Cabo Cope.

Everything you need to know if you want to start sea kayaking

Tips for Getting Started with Sea Kayaking

It is advisable that you make the first kayak trips after having adequately trained in the basic safety and navigation aspects. It is also recommended, as far as possible, to sail in company and if possible accompanied by more experienced kayakers.

The sport of kayaking, like any other sport involving nature, can be dangerous, unpredictable and physically demanding. Always apply common sense and consider the following tips to start kayaking:

1) Plan all your kayak excursions:

to. Check the meteorological information and the state of the sea during the period of time that you will be in the water. It is important to look at the trend of the meteorological variables even before and after the expected navigation interval. Forecasts may not be exact. Predict an anticipation of adverse weather conditions. It generally dismisses going out in winds of force greater than 2/3 Bft.
b. Be aware of your fitness and other possible physical limitations. Do not overestimate your abilities, be honest with your limits.
c. According to this information, select the boarding point, the route and the landing point avoiding navigation in the open sea. Try to navigate near the coast where you can find a shelter if necessary. Stay no more than 2 nautical miles from a safe landing point.

2) Communicate your plan to known people indicating the route, start and arrival times. It also informs of any change in the route before or during navigation.

3) Prepare your navigation equipment:

The kayak:
to. Use a safe kayak that has adequate buoyancy and lifelines. In an emergency, do not leave him because he can act as a life buoy.
b. Take a spare shovel.
c. Shovel float.
d. Bilge pump, sponge or container.
and. Nautical charts, topographic maps, courses.
F. Orientation systems: navigation compass on the foredeck.
g. Spare outerwear in a waterproof bag.

The paddler:
to. Always wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket. Make sure it is properly positioned.
b. Avoid hypothermia: Different combinations of thermal, waterproof, neoprene or dry suits provide comfort against moderate cold weather.
c. Secure your photoprotection: The sun and sunlight reflected by the sea cause sunstroke, burns and chronic skin diseases. Wear sunscreens, clothing, and hats that filter the harmful UV frequencies of sunlight. Likewise, the eyes must be protected with suitable glasses to avoid direct and reflected solar radiation. The glasses also prevent splashes that can cause eye irritation.
d. Wear a helmet if the activity requires it.
and. Include in your equipment telephone and / or VHF radio.
F. Rescue and towing rope.
g. Orientation systems: navigation compass, bearing compass, quadrant.

In an accessible place of the kayak and in the vest:
to. Always carry enough food and water.
b. Distress signals (whistle, watertight flashlight, strobe lamps, red flares).
c. First aid kit.
d. American tape and basic repair kit.

4) Check equipment and capabilities before sailing

to. Check the good condition of the material. In particular, it checks rechargeable batteries as they can be discharged in the absence of use, bilge pump operation and compass calibration.
b. Check that the tub cover is perfectly placed and that the tubs are tightly closed.
c. Verify the correct operation of the daggerboard or rudder and that they are ready to be used.
d. Check that your physical condition is adequate for planned navigation, always thinking that you should maintain an energy reserve in case any unforeseen incident occurs.
and. Try to have adequate training to properly use all the equipment.
F. Before starting the route, it is a good practice to rehearse the re-entry maneuvers to the kayak in case of capsizing that you have been previously taught.

5) Browse safely

to. Try to sail in company.
b. Avoid boarding / disembarking on breakers with waves over 50 cm.
c. Know your situation at all times with the help of dead reckoning and through orientation with a map and compass or optionally with GPS.
d. With the sea in the background, you must sail far enough from the coast and from shallow waters to avoid capsizing due to waves.
and. Pay attention when navigating near ends, points and groynes where the wind can accelerate and the sea becomes more rough and unstable.
F. If you are surprised by a strong wind or current heading towards a dangerous coastal area, adjust your course to stay in the safe area and, if possible, direct the kayak towards refuge.
g. If you are surprised by a strong wind or current heading out to sea, adjust your heading to avoid being swept away. In this wind it is dangerous to be more than two nautical miles out to sea. Try to steer the kayak away from the wind.
h. Avoid navigating in low visibility conditions but if the fog surprises you or it gets dark during navigation, first orient yourself with the compass, the sun, the noise of the breaker or the direction of the waves. Second, try to stay in the safe navigation zone without straying too far from the coast or getting too close to the breakers, and third, locate and head to a safe landing point. If you think there may be other boats in the area, emit acoustic signals and use a waterproof flashlight or strobe so they can locate you.

6) In an emergency situation

to. If unfortunately and despite having planned the navigation correctly, you find yourself in an emergency situation, it is highly recommended to think about the situation before acting rashly. It is necessary to observe the conditions that have put us in difficulty, assess the situation and make the best possible decision in time so that we do not worsen our security. If you don't know what to do in case of difficulty, stay calm, conserve energy, take protective measures against the cold and bodily harm and try to get help.
b. If you think that the conditions exceed your abilities to control the kayak or find a safe place, send a distress message in time with the phone to the maritime emergency number 900 202 202 or through channel 16 of the VHF station. You must be prepared to communicate your position as clearly and accurately as possible to the rescue service. In any case, follow the instructions of the rescue personnel.
